Does It Matter What I Believe?
In the ancient world there was a saying that all roads led to Rome. The
meaning of that saying was that no matter which road one took in their
travels they would most likely get to the city of Rome eventually. Some
people today have adopted a similar approach to God in their thinking.
After all, aren't all religions basically the same? Don't all belief systems
eventually get you accepted by god? In truth the answer to that question is
no. All religions and belief systems are not equally valid in the eyes of the
God of the universe. What you choose to believe concerning spiritual
things makes the difference between life everlasting and being eternally
separated from God. What you choose to believe regarding spiritual things
will also directly impact the quality of the life you live now on this earth.
God is vitally interested in both of these issues where you and I are
concerned. At the heart of the matter you will find the issue of what God will
accept rather than what you and I are willing to offer him. We do not set
the standard regarding this and it is important to know that God has not
been silent about the matter. He has , in fact , given us a great deal of
revelation regarding just what it takes to obtain his favor both in this life
and the life to come. That revelation comes to us through nature, through
the Bible, but especially through the life of Jesus , The Christ of The Living
God.
It is written ; " God , who at sundry times and in divers manners
spake unto the fathers by the prophets , hath in these last days
spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all
things, by whom also he made the worlds.; who being the
brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and
upholding all things by the word of his power , when he had by
himself purged our sins , sat down on the right hand of the Majesty
on high." ( Hebrews 1:1- 3) If you would know what is acceptable before
His Majesty God on high, then you will look at the life of Jesus Christ as it
is recorded in the Bible. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament
were written to point to Jesus Christ. He himself said that to believe the
writings of Moses was to believe in him.
It is written ; " Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there
is one that accuseth you , even Moses, in whom ye trust for had ye
believed Moses ye would have believed me , for he wrote of me."
( John 5 : 45 - 46 ) It is also recorded that Jesus stated ; " Search the
scriptures; for in them ye think that ye have eternal life: and they
are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me that ye may
have eternal life. " (John 5 : 39 - 40 ) The central question of all belief
systems then is; " What do you believe concerning Jesus Christ? "
Your answer to that one question determines your eternal destiny. Nothing
else matters until that single issue is settled before God. Some men say
that he was a good moral example. Others say he was a powerful religious
leader. Still others call him a prophet. Don't you think it is imperative that
we know what God says concerning Jesus ? He wants you to know who
Jesus is so much that he took the time to have the Bible written in order to
reveal him unto you.
In the Gospel of John we are told; "And many other signs truly did
Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this
book , but these are written , that ye might believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life
through his name." ( John 20 :30 -31 ) . John also wrote in his first
epistle: " These things have I written unto you that believe on the
name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal
life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."
( I John 5 ; 13 ).
The record of John the Apostle deals extensively with the question of who
Jesus is.In fact in his gospel account alone the term believe is used in
some fashion ninety - nine times. In almost every one of those instances
that term is connected with Jesus Christ. The central message of God to
man as revealed in the Bible is that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world.
He, and he alone , was crucified , buried , and arose from the dead to pay
the price for your sin and mine.
He did not come to condemn the world , but rather to save you and I from
the condemnation which we were already subject to. We are told ;
" For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth
on him is not condemned : but he that believeth not is condemned
already, because he hath not believed in the name of the Son of
God. " ( John 3 : 17 - 18 ). You see my friend we have a sin debt which is
owed to Almighty God and must some how be paid. That debt demands
death as the only acceptable payment. Knowing that this is the case Jesus
chose to come and live among us, let mankind crucify him, and show us
that he had the power to cancel that debt by walking out of the tomb and
ascending unto God the Father. He did all that is necessary and all that
could be done. Jesus paid it all. No one else ever has or ever will do what
Jesus Christ has done for you.
That is precisely why we are told ; " Neither is there salvation in any
other, for there is none other name under heaven given among
men, whereby ye must be saved" (Acts 4 : 12). God has chosen to
provide a way of salvation through the name of Jesus Christ by which any
and all may come unto him and be accepted. God chose to provide one
way and it is this way. It is written ; " Jesus saith unto him I am the way,
the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me "
(John 14 : 6 ) You cannot obtain eternal life without believing in him.
God stands ready to grant you the free gift of life if you will only accept his
offer by choosing to believe on The Lord Jesus Christ. To accept God's
offer simply talk to God and admit to him that you know you are a sinner.
Tell him that you know that Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and arose
from the tomb in order that the penalty for your sin would be paid. Ask him
to forgive you for your sin based upon that work which was done by Christ,
and to come into your life and take control from this day forward. Through
out the history of mankind thousands of men and women have come into
the family of God by making this confession and placing their belief in
Jesus Christ entirely for their eternal salvation. God invites you to do so.
It is written ; " That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord
Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man
believeth unto righteousness ; and with the mouth confession is
made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, whosoever believeth
on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between
the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all
that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the
Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10: 9 - 13). Won't you call upon him
